HERCULES Project

Engine performance and pollutant emission syntonized to an optimum.
The I.P. HERCULES (Integrated Project: High Efficiency R&D on Combustion with Ultra Low Emissions for Ships) is a large-scale research project supported by the European Commission and the Swiss Federal Government.
The objetive of the project is the development of new technologies to reduce the gaseous and particulate emission drastically. Concurrently the engine efficiency and reliability should be increased and the specific fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and engine lifecycle costs should be reduced.
For continuous emission monitoring of the vessel a multi-component analyzer system MCS100E HW was installed on board (Figure). A glass fiber reinforced protected cabinet (IP65) was used for security reasons on board. The complete system was checked in a test bed for its suitability on sea.

The NDIR analyzer measures the components CO, CO2, NO, NO2, H2O, important for monitoring as well as O2 and volatile organic cabon using an integrated zirconia dioxide and a FID analyzer, respectively. Additional gas components like SO2 are also possible to measure. The system measures these gases at 200 °C to prevent the formation of condensates and blogging of filters and sample gas line.

The analyzer facilitates the correlation of the measured values with the actual engine power according to MARPOL Annex VI - Technical Code. Via a Modbus interface the analyzer is integrated into the communication system of the ship, which allows a direct transfer of data.
Hitherto cruises with a MCS100E HW on board shows the excellent suitability of the analyzer for contiuous emission monitoring of heavy fuel fired diesel engines. Also the maintenance interval of three months defined by the type approval were met under the conditions on board. Furthermore, the integration into the communication of the ship enables an optimum coordination of engine power and pollutant emission.

Conclusion:
The MCS100E HW has passed its maiden voyage successfully.
